(Franklin Delano Roosevelt 1882–1945) a Democratic politician who became the 32nd US ↑President (1933–45), also known informally as FDR, and the only one to be elected four times. From 1921 he suffered from ↑polio (= a serious disease affecting the nervous system) and could hardly walk without help. Before becoming President he was Governor of New York (1929–33). As President, he introduced his ↑New Deal programme which helped the US to recover from the ↑Great Depression. Roosevelt was a cheerful man who gave Americans confidence with his ↑fireside chats on radio. Before the US entered ↑World War II, he supported Britain with the ↑Lend-Lease plan.
